2021 LIAA Girl’s Division 3 Outlook

Carbondale

2019 Record: 2-12

2020 Record: Did not play due to COVID-19

2021 Projected Record: 0-14

Notable Players: ?

Notable Graduates: Deana Mancuso, Sarah Tolerico

The Carbondale Area School District was one of three districts in the area to suspend all fall athletics in 2020. It was quite upsetting not seeing the Lady Chargers last season, especially because it would’ve been Deana Mancuso & Sarah Tolerico’s senior years. They were the team’s two all stars in 2019, which would end up being the last time they put on a jersey.

Heading into 2021, there isn’t much we know about this squad. It’s definitely not easy to come back after not playing a full season, but we wish them the best of luck, and hopefully we can shine the spotlight on a few of their players as the season progresses.

Elk Lake

2020 Record: 3-3-1

2021 Projected Record: 6-8

Head Coach: Katie Mitchell

Notable Players: Caitlyn Kerr (forward, junior), Megan Johns (forward, junior), Delaney Curley (defender, junior), Mackenzie Strohl (midfielder, sophomore)

Notable Graduates: Davia Adams, Tamara Voda

Where should we get started with the Lady Warriors? How about Caitlyn Kerr, who was a first team all-star in 2020 and was the Division 3 “Player of the Year.” She scored the second most goals in the division as a sophomore, and it should be very exciting to see what she does as an encore in her junior season.

Megan Johns, another first team all-star was also very impressive in her sophomore season. She was tied with goals scored with Kerr, and led the division in assists. On defense, Delaney Curley, another first team all-star will be returning for her junior season. Goalkeeper Tamara Voda has graduated, so that is a hole that will need to be filled. Curley also saw time in keeper last season, so maybe she fills that need? We shall see!

Forest City

2020 Record: 4-5 *overall*

2021 Projected Record: 9-5

Notable Players: Haylee Hermann (goalkeeper, senior), Emily Matoushek (forward, junior), Gabby Pleska (midfielder, junior), Lizzie Bartholomay (midfielder, senior)

Notable Graduates: Isabelle Richner, Bella Pleska, Claire Urbas

Returning to the Lady Foresters’ squad in 2021 is Emily Matoushek, who led the division in goals scored last year. Despite accomplishing that, she was not named to the all-star team, which should definitely change this Fall. Bella Pleska might have graduated, but her sister Gabby will be entering her junior season. Pleska tied Matoushek with the division lead in the “goals scored” category.

Goalkeeper Haylee Hermann will be in her senior season. Last year the FCR keeper made 80 saves. It should be noted that all of the Lady Foresters’ all-stars have graduated, but they leave the team in good hands with this strong returning core of players.

Mid Valley

2020 Record: 1-5-2

2021 Projected Record: 4-10

Head Coach: Keegan Farrell

Notable Players: Grace Goetz (forward, junior), Madison Kizer (midfielder, junior), Abbie Larson (defender, junior), Courtney Rebar (goalkeeper, junior)

Notable Graduates: Ciara Strupcewski

Well, 2020 might not have been the greatest year for the Lady Spartans, but on the bright side all three of their first team all-stars are returning for their junior seasons. Forward Grace Goetz was tied for second on the team with goals scored last season, along with midfielder Madison Kizer. Courtney Rebar made 106 saves last Fall, which was good for 4th overall in the league.

West Scranton

2020 Record: 0-6-2

2021 Projected Record: 6-7-1

Head Coach: Jim Cook

Notable Players: Courtney Hazleton (midfielder, junior), Lindsay Tunis (midfielder, junior), Jessica Bennett (defender, senior), JaeAnna Topa (defender, junior), Emily Bresser (midfielder, junior)

Notable Graduates: Marytere Quintana

The Lady Invaders might have gone winless in 2020, but it seems like things might be trending in the right direction for them. All of their key players are returning this season, which is something other teams in the division can’t say. Courtney Hazleton led her team with 3 goals scored last year, and was named a first team all-star in her sophomore season. Jessica Bennett was a bright spot last year on defense, as she was named a first team all-star in her junior year.

*Records are based on divisional games & crossover games, unless noted*
